I was amazed by two things. How had Maryam Fakhr al-Din appeared in my dreams with her own voice? And how had Sanaa heard her speaking so freely? Then again, what did this word muga‘las mean?

This word frustrated me. Was my writing really muga‘las? I was so embarrassed that I spent several days trying to get Sanaa to explain the word's meaning to me, but she couldn't help. In fact, for some reason she deliberately tried to make sure that the word remained a riddle or puzzle.

Finally, she explained herself without beating around the bush.

“If you insist on continuing to write—either in classical Arabic or Egyptian colloquial—you can keep on enjoying your rosy dreams. But in another room of the house—and in another bed.”

Now I understood where things stood. I had two choices.

I could either continue writing, choking on the word that Maryam Fakhr al-Din had spoken in the dream, or stop writing and no longer dream about her and the film, so as to be able to sleep in my wife's bed.

I thought about it for some time. Then I chose the second option, and told her so.
